Address: Herrengasse 3/III, 8010 Graz, Austria
Jan Sever is a renowned Slovenian pianist and professor at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana, where he heads the piano department. His musical journey began in early childhood when his mother, also a pianist, enrolled him in a choir at the age of four and a year later in piano lessons. By age 11, he had already won the TEMSIG competition for young musicians in Slovenia. Growing up, he was surrounded by classical music, especially the works of composers like Rachmaninoff and Mahler, which left a lasting impact on him. He has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Prešeren Award for students.
Although classical music was the central focus of his studies, he developed an early interest in improvised music, which he has actively pursued over the past decade. His exploration has spanned styles like tango and jazz, influenced by artists such as Astor Piazzolla, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Miles Davis, and especially the improvisational genius Keith Jarrett. He has also collaborated with various ensembles, including Moonlight Sky, Vlatko Stefanovski, Goran Bojčevski, Vasko Atanasovski, and QuatroPorTango, among others. Sever is the author and co-author of numerous albums in both classical music and genres like tango, fusion, and jazz. He is currently in the studio, recording a new album of selected improvised pieces.
Today, Sever performs entirely original and improvised concerts, blending influences from classical music, tango, jazz, and world music. He builds a bridge between the learned and the spontaneous, the old and the new, merging his love for creativity and musical creation into what he calls spontaneous composition. You are invited to a solo piano improvisation concert at the Kultursalon Graz on December 13, 2024, at 7:00 PM.
